Happy Christmas and Every Blessing for the New Year
Happy Christmas! Many thanks to all of you for your support and prayers during the past year: you are a great parish to serve and I greatly appreciate your time, commitment and generosity. My prayers during this Christmas season are for your families and friends, that we may receive every blessing from the Lord in this new year!  Fr. Michael.

Parish Helpers
As a bit of a thank you - all those who help out in the parish in any way: musicians; readers; cleaners; servers; handmaids; sacristans; SVP; welcomers; Knights; teachers; flower arrangers; counters and children’s liturgy etc. are invited to an ‘Open House’ gathering in the presbytery between 3.00 and 5.00 pm on Sunday 7th January.

Newman New school — That’s Entertainment
From Fr Norman Johnston: The News & Star recently gave two pages of excellent cover to the birth of Newman Secondary School in 1968 and its anticipated re-birth after the floods of 2015.
Money will not be provided for the building of a chapel in the new school and so the Knights of St Columba have undertaken to supervise the raising of £75,000 for this project.
They propose to hold a major fund-raising event (a variety show), That’s Entertainment, on Friday 11 May 2018, in the Sands Centre. Preparations are now well underway. Young people, ex-Newman pupils and local amateur talent will be taking part. Book the date!
Fr Norman is also looking for an old metal bucket for the show. If you have one lying around in your garden or shed, please let him know - tel: 01228 538119.

Mass Times
Please note the revised Mass times between Christmas and Epiphany.

New Years Resolutions
Why not make a spiritual resolution for next year?  You could make a commitment to pray the rosary on a regular basis for a particular intention, attend the First Friday Mass and devotions, commit to visiting a neighbour who is alone on a regular basis, commit to reading Scripture regularly…have a think about it.

Epic: the Early Church

Coming soon to the parish is a ten part series of presentations on the history of the Early Church.  The course, on Tuesday evenings, will be limited to twenty people.  Please think about signing up in the new year.  We’ll be starting at the beginning of February.

From the Bishop: “Do you support Catholic schools and the right of Catholics to send their children to them? Then we need you to make your voice heard.”
“The Government is making a critical decision on whether to overturn the admissions cap which prevents Catholic schools from allowing all Catholic pupils to attend. It has acknowledged that this policy discriminates against Catholics and promised to abandon it. Now we need you to tell the Government not to u-turn on their promise to Catholics.
Visit http://catholicnews.org.uk/ or search for ‘Catholic Education’ in your search engine to write to the Government and urge it to drop their policy which bans new Catholic schools. Thank you.”  Michael G Campbell OSA

Rorate Caeli Mass
The Rorate Caeli Mass is a traditional Advent devotion, wherein the Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary for Advent is offered just before dawn and is lit by candlelight alone. The interplay of light and darkness speak to the meaning of Advent and the coming of the Light of the world.  There will be a sung Rorate Caeli Mass celebrated at Christ the King on Saturday 16th December at 7.30 am.  Why not make this a special moment in your preparation for Christmas.

Sacrament of Reconciliation - Confession

Ad orientem
During Advent we again are united in turning towards the Lord together as priest and people as we await his coming at Christmas. All Masses during Advent will be celebrated ad orientem [facing East], as was the custom last year.

Advent Calendar for the Hungry
It’s simple - instead of opening the window on an Advent Calendar - in a bag or a box place one item of food each day during Advent [see  food bank notice above for ideas] you can bring the items you’ve collected and place them in the Food Bank Basket [CTK] or SVP Box each week [MM] or on Christmas Eve where items can be placed around the Crib as a gift to the Infant Lord.
