Newsletter Items from 28th February 2016

24 Hours with the Lord - up for a challenge?
On Friday 4th March - Saturday 5th March the parish will join with churches throughout the world in having a period of adoration lasting 24 hours.  So that our primary school can be involved this will be hosted at St. Margaret Mary beginning with Mass at 10.00 am.  The Sacrament of Reconciliation [with visiting priests] and periods of prayer for particular intentions will be celebrated throughout the 24 hours.  We will need people to come forward to ‘watch’ during the night - are you up for the challenge?

Palm Sunday
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday - this year there will be a vigil Mass at Christ the King at 6.00 pm as usual but on Palm Sunday morning, there will be only one celebration of Mass at 10.30 am at St. Margaret Mary.  Please make a note of this.

The Easter Triduum
This year will be celebrated at Christ the King.  Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be at 7.00 pm on Holy Thursday.  The Commemoration of Our Lord’s Passion and Death at 3.00 pm on Good Friday.  The Easter Vigil will begin at 7.00 pm [sunset being 6.37 pm].  Clocks go forward one hour during the Easter Weekend.  Mass on Easter Sunday will be the usual times of 9.00 am and 11.00 am.

Stations of the Cross
On Tuesday at 11.30 am at St. Margaret Mary,  followed by a soup lunch - donations to Mary’s Meals. 

Festival Choir
The choir will be resuming on Sunday evenings from 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm, starting from Sunday 7th February. All are welcome to join us, especially new members. We will be preparing music for the Easter liturgies and just enjoying being together and singing.

St Margaret Mary SVP
We are now, once again, collecting for food parcels for local families to be distributed during the week beginning Monday 14th March. Please check labels for 'best before' dates. Thank you in advance for your continued generosity.

Pilgrimage to Rome
Places have become available on the parish pilgrimage to Rome this May.  For more information, contact Gill at Tangney Tours on 01732 886666.

Young People  — Pilgrimage to Lourdes
Year 11+ - A great week of faith, service, fun and friendship for the young people of our diocese, 21-30 July 2016. Deadline for applications: 28 February 2016. Book on-line now at www.castleriggmanor.co.uk/yatm-events.  The parish will assist in funding this pilgrimage for any young person interested in attending.

Carlisle Food Bank
Please continue to support this worthy initiative via the basket in the porch at Christ the King. We have been asked by Carlisle Food Bank if we can particularly supply items with a high protein content like UHT Milk, tinned meats and/or fish etc. There is a basket in the porch for items at Christ the King.

SVP Appeal at Christ the King
Any pre-decimal or unwanted foreign coins can be placed in the SVP box at Christ the King.

Ladies Group
Will meet on Tuesday evening at 7.30 pm in the Parish Room - this month ‘A taste of computers’.

Carlisle Renewal Days 
Monthly days of worship, prayer and praise. The next date is Saturday 5th March. To be held at St Edmund’s Church, Orton Rd, Carlisle. All welcome. Renewal days start at 11.00 am and finish around 4.00 pm. Please join us even if you cannot stay for the full day. Tea and coffee provided and please bring a contribution to a shared lunch. The choir will be resuming on Sunday evenings from 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm, starting from Sunday 7th February. All are welcome to join us, especially new members. We will be preparing music for the Easter liturgies and just enjoying being together and singing.

This will take place for the deanery at Our Lady and St. Joseph’s, Warwick Square, on Saturday 27th February from 11.00 am - 4.00 pm. Led by Sr Mary Julian RSM.

The Year of Mercy — “Blessed are … ”
Pope Francis calls us during this Year of Mercy to focus prayerfully on three main aspects: recognising God’s mercy, receiving God’s mercy and becoming more merciful ourselves.
Sister Mary Julian RSM will reflect on principles and practicalities for The Year of Mercy by looking at the “Beatitudes”. The next talk is on Tuesday 16 February at 7.00pm, St Margaret Mary’s Parish Centre: Blessed are the poor in spirit.

Welcome
On Monday, we welcome Fr. John Flynn to the parish.  Fr. John is a priest of the Diocese of Salford and Dean of Studies at Oscott Seminary and lectures in Philosophy.

Diocesan Shrine of Divine Mercy
The Bishop has made OL&SJ a shrine church for the Jubilee Year of Mercy called by Pope Francis. The shrine of Divine Mercy will be inaugurated on Friday 4 March at 3.00 pm.
The Bishop will preside at Vespers, lead the Divine Mercy devotions and conclude with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Opportunity for Confession from 2.30 pm. There will also be opportunity to venerate a relic of St Faustina, who inaugurated the Divine Mercy devotions.

Women’s World Day of Prayer
On Friday 4th March at Our Lady & St. Joseph - the time is given as 2.30 pm which appears to clash with the above.

St Patricks Day Dance

Featuring the rocking Rev Fr Kev @ 7.00 pm on 12 March at the parish centre. Tickets £5 - available from behind the bar.

Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday [the beginning of Lent], a day of fasting and abstinence, will be observed on Wednesday 10th February.  Mass with imposition of Ashes will be celebrated at 9.15 am at St. Margaret Mary [school Mass] and 5.30 pm at Christ the King 

Stations of the Cross
Volunteers are needed to lead Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 12.00 noon at Christ the King.  We also require people to make a pot of soup which is shared after Stations.  Donations will go to Mary’s Meals.

Soup Lunches at St. Margaret Mary’s
Soup lunches are being organised at St. Margaret Mary’s - more details will appear in next week’s newsletter.

First Holy Communion 2016
First Holy Communion will be celebrated in the parish on Sunday 5th June 2016. Catechesis is held on Thursday evenings at 6.00 pm at St. Margaret Mary Parish Community Centre. Regular attendance at Sunday Mass is an essential part of the preparation.

Carlisle Walsingham Pilgrimage
Each year since 1954, members of parishes in Carlisle and district have joined together and gone on pilgrimage to the National shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk. Dates this year: Tuesday 29 March – Friday 1 April.
