Newsletter Items from 4th October 2015

Faith on Tap
Next Month we have two ‘Faith on Tap’ talks: on 5th November we welcome Bishop John Keenan and then on 19th November we welcome Fr. Marcus Holden.

SVP St. Margaret Mary’s
Until October 25th our weekly collections after mass will be jointly in aid of Syrian refugees and the Calais refugee camp. In addition to this, we will also be collecting food and clothing to pass on to Calais Action Carlisle. For further information, contact Elisabeth, Kathleen or Richard ( 544737 ).
After October 25th, we will begin our usual food parcel collection to pass on to local families at Christmas. Please use the box at the back of church as usual.

Refugees
A table will be set up at the back of church this Sunday to enable Parishioners at St. Margaret Mary to pick up a shoe box and put in warm clothing, toiletries “Male and Female”, Scarfs & Gloves etc.  See Elisabeth, Maria or Alison for further details.

St. Margaret Mary Shared Lunch
In honour of the feast of St. Margaret Mary and following on from the success of the Christ the King 60th one - there will be a shared lunch from 1.00 pm on Sunday 18th October in the Parish Centre.  Please sign up with offers of food on the sheets provided.

Altar Servers Training
A training afternoon for altar servers will be held at St. Margaret Mary on Saturday 10th October at 1.00 pm.  Could all servers please attend.  Any men and boys wishing to serve in the parish could also come along to this.

Sacred Heart Toddlers
On Wednesday mornings from 9.15 am at St. Margaret Mary School.

Catholicism: the New Evangelisation
This course will resume on Tuesday 13th October.

Many thanks for your offering of £672.57 last weekend.  There were 215 at Mass over the weekend.

Interested in becoming a Catholic?
If you are interested or know someone who is interested in becoming a Roman Catholic, an informal group will be formed after half term in October to explore the richness of the Catholic Faith.  Contact Fr. Michael for more details or just for a chat.

Flowers at Christ the King
We’re looking for willing volunteers to join the flower arranging team at Christ the King.  If you’re interested, please have a word with Fr. Michael.  There will be a collection on 11th October at Christ the King to cover expenses for flowers.

Diocesan Education Mass
The Bishop invites all who are involved in teaching (in the Catholic or State sector), Liturgy with Children, preparation for First Holy Communion, etc, to gather with him for a votive Mass of the Holy Spirit, in the cathedral, Lancaster LA1 3BT, on Friday 16 October, at 7.00 pm, to ask God’s blessing on the new year of teaching and formation.

First Holy Communion 2016
First Holy Communion will be celebrated in the parish on Sunday 5th June 2016.  There will be an initial meeting for parents on Thursday 21st January 2016 and preparation of candidates will begin on Thursday 4th February.  Regular attendance at Sunday Mass is an essential part of the preparation.

Quiz Night
A quiz night in aid of the charity ‘Headway’ on Monday 5th October from 7.30 pm in the Parish Centre.  All welcome to form teams of 5. Raffle and prizes to win.  Why not come along?

Support Syrian Refugees
Join us in a Saturday Brunch at Waterton Hall, Warwick Square, on Saturday 17th October from 12.40 pm (after 12.10 pm Mass).  There will be a Tombola, Cake Stall, Raffle and other attractions. This event is being organised by The Extended Family of RSHM (St Gabriel’s Sisters). Any donations of good quality Tombola or Raffle prizes would be gratefully received.  Please contact 01228 562756 for further details or to arrange collection of donations.

Ladies Group
Meet on Tuesday evening at 7.30 pm at St. Margaret Mary’s.  All welcome to come along - this month is a craft evening.

Bilingual Prayer Books and Readings
Bilingual prayer books are available in both churches for use during the celebration of Holy Mass - in Polish, Spanish and Portuguese.  The Sunday readings are also available in Spanish, Portuguese and Polish. If other languages are required, please have a chat with Fr. Michael and they will be provided.  It is a desire, over time, that one of the readings on a Sunday will be proclaimed in another language occasionally.

Room at the inn?
Charity HOST is seeking friendly people who could volunteer to offer an invitation to adult international students for a day, weekend or four days at Christmas. Praying for vocations
In this Year of Priestly Vocations in the diocese, please pray daily for this intention [using the Diocesan Prayer Card or the prayer found on the front of this newsletter] and consider attending the Eucharistic Holy Hour held in each church of the parish every week,

Annual Retreat
Fr. Michael will be absent from the parish from 19th October for his annual spiritual retreat.

Month of the Holy Rosary
Please renew your love for this devotion by praying the rosary during the month of October.  
Rosary beads are available from Fr. Michael if you are in need of one.

Faith on Tap
This Thursday we welcome Canon Luiz Ruscillo to the parish for our monthly ‘Faith on Tap’.  His talk is ‘A gentle physician: the Gospel of Luke’. Luke’s Gospel will begin to be proclaimed from the beginning of Advent - an ideal opportunity to learn a bit more about this gospel.  The evening opens at 7.30 pm and the talk starts at 8.00 pm.

From Sr. Maureen - a thank you
Sr. Maureen would like to thank Fr. Michael and all the parishioners for their prayers and support over the last 5 months. I have been diagnosed with inflammation of some of my blood vessels which is being treated with steroids. Thank God I am responding well and in time, will make a complete recovery.

Altar Servers Training

This Saturday at the New Waterton Hall from 1.00 pm, Fr John Millar will lead an opportunity for musicians and singers on music in the liturgy.  Could all singers and musicians in the parish please attend this.  Cost is £5 payable on the day.

CAFOD Harvest Fast Day
This takes place on Friday - envelopes will be distributed at Mass this weekend and returned next Sunday.  The whole point of the fast day is that of spiritual sacrifice - i.e. going without some food - and offering the cost of that food for the poorest in the world.  Please also pray on Friday for the intentions of this Fast Day:

Your support and donations to CAFOD this Harvest Fast Day will enable our partners to work with people across the world to have access to tools and training and empower them to become self-sufficient, despite living in the most difficult of conditions. Additionally, your donations this Fast Day will be used to fund our partners work in Europe and the Middle East to support those affected by the refugee crisis.

SVP St. Margaret Mary’s

Refugees
Could those desiring to help refugees by offering accommodation please have a word with Fr. Michael. The diocese are directing people to their local authority i.e. Carlisle City Council but there is no information on their website.  Fr. Michael will attempt to clarify things by contacting Stewart Young.

Home Mission Sunday
This Sunday the diocese launches a ‘Year for Priestly Vocations’ - please take a prayer card home with you and find time to pray this every day.

Christ the King Eucharistic Adoration
The time for this has moved at Christ the King - it will be at 6.00 pm on Thursday evenings: the particular focus of this ‘Holy Hour’ is to pray for vocations.

Sacred Heart Toddlers

On Parish Singers and Musicians on Saturday 3rd October. For Extra-Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion on Saturday 24th October. The Parish Council one has been cancelled. A new one open to all parishioners is ‘Exploring the Liturgy’ on Saturday 21st November.
All being held at Our Lady and St. Joseph’s beginning at 1.00 pm.  Please sign up on the sheets provided.

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society in England and Wales has around 10,000 members who, last year, made 500,000 visits to those in need.  September is SVP Awareness Month - finding, loving and serving God in our community is fundamental to the Society’s work.
The SVP is always in need of new members to carry out this work so if you would like to find out more, please contact Kate Reardon at St. Margaret Mary or Paul Daley at Christ the King.  There is a sign up sheet at the back of both churches if you would like to become a member. The third poster is up this week.

Will be celebrated in May 2016.  The formation of candidates will be organised on a deanery level and will be held at Newman School.  As well as attending these sessions, candidates will still be expected to participate regularly in the celebration of Holy Mass in the parish.  More details will be published shortly.

In the city - Autumn Catechesis
In line with Pope Francis’ passionate calls for the Church to evangelise, St Bede’s/St Edmund’s are offering a catechesis for youth, adults, catholic, non- Catholic, atheists etc. All are welcome. These catecheses presented by the Neo-catechumenal Way will take place at 8.00 pm on Mondays and Thursdays at St Bede’s Liturgy Room, beginning 21 September. If you want to grow in faith, or to find out how to share your faith with others around you, come along and bring family and friends.

The Sign of Peace
Bishop Campbell writes the following: “Last summer there was a circular letter from the Congregation for Divine Worship advising that the sign of peace should be simple and restrained without movement either by priest or people, and that there should not be “a song of peace” at this moment in the celebration of Mass.” The sign of peace should simply be turning to our nearest neighbour and shaking hands - no words should accompany this symbolic action.

Fr. Michael is in Belfast on Friday & Saturday - Fr. Norman Johnston will celebrate Masses next weekend. Fr. Michael will be back in time for the Baptisms at Christ the King.

Catholicism: the New Evangelisation
What is the ‘New Evangelisation’ and why do we need it? On Tuesday evenings beginning 15th September using Fr. Robert Barron’s Catholicism series, we’ll hope to answer these questions and find out ways we can assist with the mission of the ‘New Evangelisation’.  Please think about joining in this 6 session course. Please come along!

Assisted Suicide Bill
Thank you to all who wrote to John Stephenson MP - he replied to say that he would be opposing the Bill.

Faith on Tap

Back to School - Pupils!
We welcome back the children to our schools this week and wish them all the best in their endeavours.  May the Holy Spirit fill them with His light and guidance.

Please note the time of Mass on Tuesday, which is back in its evening slot [Fr. Michael spends Tuesday in the Education Centre in Lancaster].  There will no longer be a Friday morning Mass in the parish - parishioners are encouraged to attend Mass in the evening.

Shrine to the Infant Jesus
The Shrine is now complete at St. Margaret Mary - please visit the shrine to pray especially for children and families - particularly for this in need.  Prayer resources are available in the shrine and Novena Cards can be purchased.  The 25th of each month is a particular day for devotion to the Infant Child of Prague.
